5th transplant pictures - 1000 FU's/FUE with Robert Jones
March 2004 - Just before 1000 FUE scar repair and temple construction.
I decided to have my scars repaired using FUE. After extensive research, including many phone conversations, I decided on Dr. Robert Jones of Toronto. The top scar from my surgeries with Dr's. Seager and Hasson measures 30 cm in length and 9 mm at its widest. The bottom scar from The National Centre for Cosmetic Surgery in the UK is 14 cm in length and 5 mm at its widest. Please bare in mind that after this much work getting a pencil thin scar would have been very difficult, if not impossible, for Dr.s Seager or Hasson.

I decided to have 130 'very fine' grafts (taken from just behind the ear) placed into the temple region to slightly build up and 'feather' the previous work. This left approximately 870 grafts for the scar repair.

Healing and post operative comfort has been very good following FUE. Started Minoxidil applications today.

All the scabs are starting to fall off now. I anticipate all scabs will be gone at day 7.

All the scabs are now gone and hair growth is rapid. Donor scars can still be seen and recipient areas are still a little red. Below are more detailed pictures of the temple work.

I am using MSM to increase the hair growth - it seems to be working. The scars are visible close up but not from any distance as the redness is fading. The 'patchier' areas are due to shockloss.

Progress over the last seven months has been very good. The grafts at the temples are fully grown in and the scars are very difficult to see with my hair any longer than about a grade 3 (9mm). The following photographs were taken shortly before my sixth procedure. Please note that this is only seven months from the procedure and that more growth can be expected. I would also like to remind you that before the scar repair I needed to wear my hair very long in the back for the scars to be hidden.

![]() ![]() Conclusion
Fue scar repair works, although graft survival rates are lower than conventional placement. Dr. Jones and I estimate I have achieved a survival rate of around 75%. This guesstimate is based on the fact that the left hand side of the upper scar has produced much higher than this, maybe 90%, while the right hand side has about 70% and the lower scar much less at around 50%. With this in mind Dr. Jones and I decided to have a second pass into the scar of about 512 grafts (approximately 450 into the scar - there were a few remaining at the end that were placed into my temple), concentrating on the sparser areas.
Please note that there are a lot of doubters concerning FUE growth in scars and many will ask to see 'proof' of this 75% yield. I am more than happy to submit all photo's to anyone who is prepared to magnify them and do an accurate count, I however have a life to live. It is my opinion that the before and after photographs adequately demonstrate the success of the procedure. The 75% claim is an intelligent guess. I had a large scar area, the upper scar was approximately 30 cm in length and 9 mm at its widest, while the lower scar was 14 cm in length and 5 mm at its widest. Into this was placed 870 grafts and I think the results are amazing. I had one of the worst cases of HT scars around so imagine what 500 grafts will do in a scar of 25cm by 2-3mm! I can now wear my hair at the back at about 1cm compared to at least 3cm+ that was needed before and I am confident that I will be able to go down to 5mm or less when the additional 450 grafts grow out.
