frequently asked questions
What medication do you use? Have you had any side effects?
The combination of Finasteride and Minoxidil virtually stopped my hairloss full stop. I am on 1mg of Finasteride and use Minoxidil twice daily. My hairloss has now completely stopped but (I think) there has not been any new re-growth. Other than the shedding, I have had no side effects from any medication I have taken for hairloss. I use Nizoral shampoo every three to four days.
What does this regime cost you?
The monthly costs are as follows: Minoxidil $5, Finasteride $3 approx, Nizoral $3 approx. Total $11 approx per month.
Where do you buy these products from?
I travel worldwide a lot which makes it easier. Minoxidil from Costco USA, Finasteride from India (Dr. Reddys brand name FINAST) and Nizoral from Costco Canada. Please see my links pages for further details.
When did you get off Minoxidil prior to your treatments, and when did you get back on?
I stopped using Minoxidil one week before my operations and restarted (very gently) three days after.
How much have your procedures cost?
I just don't know the full amount I have spent. I'm too frightened to add it up.
So who do you attribute your finished look to? Dr. Seager, Dr. Hasson, or Dr. Jones?
Dr. Seager is a brilliant surgeon and did a great job in creating a very dense head of hair; Dr. Hasson, likewise a brilliant surgeon, provided the superb hairline. Scar repair with Dr. Jones, a leader in the field of FUE, finished the job.
Did Dr. Seager, Dr. Hasson or Dr. Jones have to shave any of your existing hair for the procedures?
Dr. Seager did not however Dr. Hasson asked me if I would mind shaving the first ½ cm of my hairline to make it easier to do the job and I agreed. My hair was brushed forward afterwards and undetectable after the scabs had fallen off. As the pictures show, the hair was shaved fully for the FUE procedure with Dr. Jones. This was not fully necessary however I wanted to give a concise view of the scar repair in all it's detail.
Why didn't you stop after your third surgery, your results at this stage looked good?
I just felt that my hairline could be finished of with a few hundred grafts. I was very impressed with the results of hairlines using the lateral slit technique and decided that this was the best way to finish my transformation. With the advancement of FUE I decided that scar repair was now a viable option.
What did you have done to the 'plug like' 500 mini/micro grafts? Did Dr. Seager dissect them and replant them or plant around them?
Dr. Seager planted around them, disguising them completely.
What is the density of your hairline?
I don't know. High double figures? What I can say is that it looks natural and reasonably impressive for a guy approaching 40!
What about your new hair, does it grow in with a different texture or in an odd direction. Do you think it looks 100% natural? Has anyone ever guessed that you had something done?
Only single hair follicular units are used in the hairline but these are generally not quite as fine as the hairs that occur naturally in the hairline. I think that this still looks natural and unnoticeable if done correctly but could be detected by someone with a skilled knowledge or experience of current surgical hair replacement techniques IF examined very, very closely. The only comments I have ever had are…'I like your new hairstyle' and 'haven't you got a great head of hair'!
What about 'shockloss'?
I suffered a fair amount of shockloss on the first three procedures due to their size. I had no shockloss with Dr. Hasson's hairline transplant and a little with my FUE procedure. The only consolation is that it does grow back - it has to get worse before it gets better!
What about swelling?
It is my understanding that the amount of swelling decreases with each new surgery but is also obviously based on the size of each procedure. This was the case with me - my first surgery resulted in a lot of swelling from about day two to day six posy surgery, proportionately less with surgeries two and three and none with surgery four and five (much smaller procedures).
Did you have some hairloss in your crown and did you get any transplants there?
I haven't had too much loss in the crown and I'm relying on the medications to keep what I have.
Why do you colour your hair?
I have a fair bit of gray so I cover this with streaks and a hair dye. In my opinion adding highlights or lowlights increases the look of density in thinning hair.
