my experiences

I am a 38 year old, professional male living in England. I started losing my hair in my mid twenties, eventually becoming a Norwood 5A. For those of you that know the humour of the British you will know that we thrive on sarcasm and the usual source was my hairloss. It hurt like hell, I was a young man whose confidence was crushed. I shaved my hair very, very short and it suited me, I looked good, but I felt like crap.

I saw an advertisement for laser hair transplant surgery at the National Centre for Cosmetic Surgery in the UK and stupidly decided to go for it. Big mistake. The surgeon did not specialize in hair transplants and he did not take into account future hair loss. I wanted to look like my friends with their full heads of hair and I think that's the first thing that we all have to realize and accept is not going to happen. Swelling was extreme after this surgery and I am left with a 5mm wide scar from the donor area because the surgeon took the strip from too low down the back of my head which therefore stretched, however I can disguise this as long as my hair is over half an inch long. I also have very small scars at my 'widows peak' where he transplanted hairs too low down that I have since had to have removed (by laser and electrolysis).

My second and third surgeries were done by Dr. Seager in Toronto. Despite a communication problem with a consultant just before my third surgery, my experiences were good (well as much as any surgery can be) and the technicians kept me smiling all day.  Swelling was quite bad on my second surgery but milder on the third.  I have a great deal of respect for Dr. Seager and the work he has done, and continues to do, in the field of hair transplants.

My fourth surgery was with Dr. Hasson as I felt, after research, that the lateral slit technique would give me the most natural result in my hairline. Dr. Hasson did the recipient incisions himself  and his experience of doing this thousands of times shows and I am very pleased the results of this last surgery. I had very little, if any, swelling due to the small size of the procedure and the scars from these latter two 'strip' surgeries are acceptable considering the amount of work I have had performed.. Hasson and Wong have got a fantastic bunch of people working with them and it was a pleasure to meet each and every one of them.

My fifth and sixth surgeries was with Dr. Jones. I was very happy with the results that I had but the scar bothered me and therefore the only choice was FUE. After speaking to Dr. Jones, and getting a feel for him and what he stands for, I knew that he was the man for the job. Dr. Jones also uses the lateral slit. The experience was good and the results of the scar repair have exceeded my expectations with an estimated 75% growth into the scar (It is much more difficult for grafts to grow in scar tissue). I decided to have a second pass at the scar and had another 512 grafts in October 2004.

You will notice my hair colour is different on a few of these photographs. My hair is naturally mid/dark brown with a fair bit of gray - some shots show hair natural, some hair dyed light brown, some show dark brown and some of the ones with my hair slicked back makes the hair look black!

I travel a lot and I buy finasteride 1mg tablets in India very cheaply. I  take 1mg per day and I do not suffer any side effects. I do not think that I have had much increased growth with finasteride (difficult to tell when combined with surgery) but I know that my hairloss has stopped. A friend of mine who had defused thinning has completely reversed his hairloss with 1mg finasteride per day combined with 5% minoxidil. I also use 5% Kirkland Signature Minoxidil twice per day. I buy this at Costco in the States for $20USD for four months supply. As you can calculate this is a cheap regime but is only possible due to my ability to travel with my work.
